Berkeley Vegan Earth Day!

In San Francisco 47 years ago, peace activist John McConnell proposed a day to honor our planet and the concept of peace. March 21st, 1970, the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere, was planned for the first celebration. A month later, on April 22nd, Senator Gaylord Nelson founded a separate Earth Day focused on providing the U.S. with a day focused on protecting our environment from the ever increasing rate of industrialization & our careless attitudes toward Mother Earth. By 1990, Earth Day had gone global with organized events planned in 141 different nations. Today, more than 190 countries and one billion people demonstrate their support for our shared planet’s environment on Earth Day!

With terrifying statistics like this one: Livestock is responsible for 65% of all human-related emissions of nitrous oxide – a greenhouse gas with 296 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide which stays in our atmosphere for 150 years! Or gems like this one: Livestock and their byproducts account for at least 32,000 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually which accounts for 51% of all greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. I had no doubt that I’d be able to easily find an Earth Day celebration that not only taught us the importance of shorter showers, recycling, using public transportation and alternate energy sources but also focused on making a plant based diet a priority! When I reached out to the Earth Night celebration hosted by Connelly Ranch, here in Napa, only 2 of the 5 food trucks even responded when I asked if vegan food would be available. So, instead of staying local to enjoy my celebration, I headed down to Vallejo and hopped on the ferry to check out the San Francisco Earth Day event! Their website and Facebook page both mentioned the organic, vegan food court that would be available! However, after joining the march and wandering through the entire Earth Day street fair, I did not find a single food truck that served vegan food. Thank goodness I had several free Kombucha samples and a Clif bar to get me through the afternoon!

I’m sure you can only imagine how psyched I was to attend the 7th annual Berkeley Vegan Earth Day the following week! Finally, an event that brought the vegan and environmental communities together to celebrate a shared vision for our sustainable future. This non-profit event was hosted by Compassionate Living who reduced the vendor cost and ticket price so more of the local community could join in on the fun. Presentations ran from 11 a.m to 3:45 p.m. and included veganic farming, the environmental impact of animal agriculture and the devastating effects that the chicken and fishing industry have on our planet.

The David Brower Center was full of animal sanctuaries like FlipSide Sanctuary in Sonoma, Goatlandia Sanctuary in Santa Rosa and Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary in Stockton. Safe havens who were there to educate the attendees on what these sentient beings endure through the victimization of factory farming. Every time I visit farm animal sanctuaries and have the opportunity to rug piggies’ bellies and visit with the cows, turkeys and bunnies, I am reminded of why I made this incredible life change 10 years ago!

I got to nibble on delicious almond dips from la onda; sweet refreshing frozen ice pops from Fairyella; hand-crafted, small-batch kombucha from Health-ade and amazing raw, organic chocolate from Lulu’s Chocolate! My favorite find was the Handsome Carver’s organic nut butters. I’ve been adding the coconut cashew butter to everything I eat! While chatting with the staff, I learned that they also have a tent at the Napa Farmers Market so now I never have to worry about running out!

Some of my favorite eco-friendly vendors included the Clean Living Collection who offers organic, non-GMO tooth powders made with bentonite clay to detoxify and remineralize, turmeric to strengthen and whiten and cinnamon & cloves to aid in cleaning and healing. My teeth feel clean and healthy after using it. The founders of Klean Kanteen – the original steel water bottle company – were also there with their new California designed and made canteens & coffee cups. With concerns about continuing to manufacture their steel canteens in China, they founded Earth-in-USA. Using clay from right here in Northern California and working with local artisan designers, they’ve created lead-free, non toxic, totally sustainable alternatives to the steel bottles. I’ve been a member of Farm Fresh to You since the Sonoma Veg Fest last year. They offer home delivered locally grown organic produce and other unique hand-crafted farm products. They have got me completely hooked on fruit shrubs! Imperfect Produce was also there! They do an amazing job of gathering the “ugly” produce that usually go to waste on farms. Supermarkets and produce distributors reject these fruits and vegetables because they aren’t picture perfect (though they taste exactly the same). They will soon be delivering here in Napa Valley!

It was a small but incredible event; I’ve already got it in my calendar for next year! With our typical Earth Day celebrations not making animal agriculture a priority in our climate change education, it is vital we support this event! So, always remember…take care of Mother Earth and eat, drink and be vegan!

St. Clair Brown Winery – Garden to Table Urban Eatery

After hearing wonderful things about St. Clair Brown Winery from friends, this is what I found on their website –

“To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion, to be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich; to study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly, to listen to stars and birds, to babes and sages, with open heart, to bear all cheerfully, to all bravely await occasions, hurry never. In a word, to let the spiritual unbidden and unconscious grow up through the common. This is to be my symphony.”

How could I not fall in love with a winery that has chosen this as their manifesto?! And that was just the beginning of the wonderful things they have to offer. St. Clair Brown Winery and their winemaker Elaine St. Clair make small lot, hand-crafted wines in a state-of-the-art facility in downtown Napa. They have much less space than many of the sprawling wineries so craft their wine in smaller tanks and equipment. Which perfectly suits the production of their 200 (or less) cases of wine. But Elaine’s skills don’t just end as a world-class winemaker. She also holds a degree in Fermentation Science from the University of California at Davis. In addition to winemaking in the 90s, she also co-owned Napa Ale Works and spent a decade brewing award-winning beer. She has since returned to winemaking exclusively until now – clearly, her love for brewing never died! Sharing the same building as their winery, they are currently constructing their own micro-brewery. Once completed, it will provide a 10-barrel, all-grain system that will allow them to produce up to 300 gallons of beer made fresh daily. gardenAcross the street, in what used to be a vacant lot, sits their Garden Eatery which is nestled in the midst of their beautiful culinary garden. Their philosophy is that part of what makes Napa Valley such an amazing place to live is access to so much homegrown and locally sourced produce. Because of this, they made the decision that the grounds would be planted with a completely edible landscape. They teamed with Master Organic Gardener, Peter Jacobsen, of Jacobsen Orchards, to help make this beautiful dream a reality. Peter has been a farmer and orchardist in Napa Valley for over 30 years who grows exclusively for restaurants including several of Napa Valley’s top Michelin rated eateries. His relationships with local Chefs seems to have really spurred the current farm to table attitudes. It is so vital for us to know where our food really comes from! And it gets even sweeter! greenhouseThe garden includes a glass greenhouse that they converted into a small eatery! You can sit inside the greenhouse or at any of the many tables set throughout the garden. Because of the incredible weather in Napa, we all gathered outside to eat, drink and be merry!

I reached out to St. Clair Brown Winery before heading over…because that is what I do! Being vegan for almost 5 years, when it comes to what I put inside my body I have got to gather the facts first. I don’t like surprises…especially when I am hungry! I had a really lovely email conversation with St. Clair Brown’s Executive Chef Andreya Nightingale. The menu offers several small plate offerings and even though the menu is small, she strives to include delicious options for us vegans. In fact, her father-in-law has been vegan for 7 years and she loves cooking for him! The menu is constantly changing too based on what is in season and available in the culinary garden. Though some of the ingredients may change she prepares 5 small plates that will always be vegan – hummus with coriander, cumin, paprika, garlic, lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil, chickpeas and house-made nut butter; olives with garden herbs, lemon zest and garlic; almonds made with garden herbs and extra virgin olive oil; chocolate bark made with marcona almonds, lavender, rosemary, heritage sea salt and no added sugar; and the PB&J board. PB&J boardThe PB&J board was inspired by her father-in-law who loves his Friday evening PB&J with Cabernet! When I was there, the PB&J was a delicious house-made almond-pecan, cardamom nut butter, apples and pears poached with Syrah and Cabernet, and a small baguette baked by Model Bakery. I was able to taste the olives and almonds which were both delicious. They are made with fresh herbs and lemons picked right out of their garden and the flavors really shine through. The PB&J board is wonderful. Instead of a typical jam, the wine poached fruit was a delicious surprise. And, of course, the chocolate bark was intense, dark and delicious! Chef Nightingale is also testing a house-made vegan cheese similar to Miyoko’s Kitchen in Marin and hopes to launch it on her winter menu! I am very excited about that and will let you know when that happens! And she offers a salad – when I was last there it included roasted beets and carrots tossed in lemon-walnut vinaigrette with shallots, mint and oregano from the garden. Just ask for the salad without the burrata cheese and you have yet another vegan option!

menuTo pair with the small plates, the garden eatery also offers wine by the half glass, glass, half bottle carafe or bottle. The wines include Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Rose, Estate Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. They also offer a tasting flight that include a sampling of four wines – the Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. All made by winemaker Elaine St. Clair and all fined without the use of animal products! And if you find a wine you love, it is available to purchase at the table or in the greenhouse. If you become a wine club member (which I plan to do next visit), you not only get 2 bottles of wine every other month but a free glass of wine whenever you visit the Garden Eatery!

St. Clair Brown Winery’s Garden Eatery is located at 816 Vallejo Street and is open daily from Noon to 8 p.m. Reservations are not required but are always appreciated and can be made through their website’s Contact Us page or by calling 707.255.5591.

I eat and drink aplenty – not only for my pleasure and enjoyment but for my readers. And this experience is hands down one of my absolute favorites! The garden is such a pleasant surprise tucked into this very urban area. The atmosphere is quiet and peaceful, the food is fresh and wonderful and the wine offers exceptional structural balance and layers of complex flavors. Be sure to make time to visit this little diamond in the rough; you will be so glad you did!

Napa Farmers Market – Vegan style!

Napa Humane is a local non-profit that offers humane education, low cost spay/neutering, a weekly vaccination clinic and the Mobile Adoption Unit for our Napa Valley dogs, cats and bunnies. The Mobile Adoption Unit debuted in May 2005 and has been partnering with local animal welfare groups including the Napa County Animal Shelter ever since! I have been volunteering for Napa Humane since their first annual Walk for Animals in 2012. if you have been to any of their exciting fundraisers, you have probably seen me there too. I do always love a good party. And you can always find me on Fridays at the vaccination clinic holding puppies and kissing dogs. I got to spend my morning Tuesday in the Mobile Adoption Unit with Wendi Piscia, Program Administrator of Napa Humane, Emily the Chihuahua mix and four adorable bunny rabbits at the Napa Farmers Market. You can find the Mobile Adoption Unit on the first and last Tuesdays and second Saturday each month through October from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. When it was time for a snack, I wandered around the Market and chatted with some really friendly and helpful people. I was really excited by the many vegan options available!

My first stop was The Handmade Pantry. Jane Bell creates the freshest, most delicious granola I have every tasted. Almost all of the granola is vegan ( a couple flavors contain honey), and there are gluten and wheat-free options as well as nut-free options. There is a granola flavor that will satisfy everyone! Jane offers generous samples of each of her granola masterpieces. I brought home a bag of the gingerbread granola and I sprinkle it on everything!

My next stop was Duck Duck Goose Farms a pesticide-free, biodynamic farm with crops in Napa. They offer premade salads so you can keep your energy up while shopping the Market. They always offer a vegan option on their menu!

Many of these delicious chocolates are dairy-free! Desmond offered me many samples and they were all so good I couldn’t decide on my favorite. I guess I will just have to keep visiting Wine Country Chocolates and tasting the chocolate to make up my mind!

I would have to say for such a meat and cheese centric city I had incredible success finding delicious and varied vegan options at the Napa Farmers Market. Be sure to come by every Tuesday and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. through October and support the vendors that provide vegan options! I hope to see you there soon!
