Homemade Vegan Confections
Obsessive Confection Disorder was founded by Melodi Donahue, the Resident Queen of Kind Confectionery Things. When she began her journey of creating sweet things, she used honey and dairy. Just like me (and many others), it was falling in love with the rescued animals at Farm Sanctuary that sealed the deal and she has been a 100% vegan company ever since. She lives here locally in Cordelia and all treats are made with compassion and care. She makes some of the best candy I have ever eaten! Visit her online storefront now and order a box of kinder, gentler sweets!
Sjaak’s Organic Chocolates is a family run business that creates vegan, organic, certified Kosher chocolates. Jacques, the owner and creator was born in the Netherlands & brought his amazing skills to Petaluma. They use the highest quality organic ingredients, support a positive work environment & fair trade practices while encouraging sustainable, non-GMO agriculture. Their Eli’s Dream Big bars, white chocolate nog bite-size treats and pretty much anything else made with white chocolate are on my BEST CANDY EVER EATEN list! In fact, Sjaak’s candy is what I send to friends and family every year for the holidays. Their products can be ordered through their online storefront. I have even visited their warehouse to purchase (lots) of candy but you must call ahead to make sure someone is there before road tripping to Petaluma!
Fox & Fawn Bakehouse is one of my favorite vegan bakeries! Located in Benicia, Tara offers her organic, fair trade cupcakes at the Benicia Farmers Market and Juice House Co. I’m fantasizing right now about a F&F cupcake & a bottle of their macadamia nut mylk! Her cupcakes are my favorite reason to visit Benicia! She bakes custom wedding and birthday cakes too. In fact, I just ordered the salted maple cake & a dozen spiced chai cupcakes for my husband’s birthday/pre-retirement party! Yum!
Tessa Mini & her partner Matt Kathol opened Bare Health Fitness & Wellness in May 2017. The fitness center offers personal training, vegan cooking classes & retreats and seminars. Tessa became vegan in May 2016 to help combat an autoimmune disease. The inflammation went away and she hasn’t looked back since! The center will soon be moving into new space located in downtown Napa at 1005 Caymus Street. Soft opening is scheduled for December 16, 2017!
Pinta Libre which means “to paint freely” was founded by vegan artist & teacher Valentina Arenas. Her current focus is on creating animal paintings to honor their existence and carry a message of compassion to her viewers. She also paints plants, fruits and vegetables to highlight the beauty of a vegan diet. In addition to selling her art, she also offers lessons. For more info or to schedule a lesson click HERE!
I was recently in St. Helena with friends who were visiting from Dallas, TX and came across the newly opened Style and Soul Boutique at 1150 Main Street. One of the owners, Kimberly Reichmuth, was working that afternoon and when I asked if the boots I was looking at were vegan or leather she shared with me that they have just one leather item left in the store. And because the request for vegan options has been so strong they plan to keep the shop vegan-friendly once the item sells! Needless to say, I went home with the boots and plan to support the store as much as I can. The clothing is super cute and very reasonably priced. Inexpensive clothing is a very rare thing to find in St. Helena!
Hair Sanctuary is a tiny 2 chair salon near downtown Napa. Tina Hoffman offers the Organic Color System and the last time I spoke to her she had added a second vegan coloring system based out of Italy. Her salon partner is very sensitive to aromas so it is a fragrance free salon which is glorious! Tina uses the John Masters Organics styling products – most of which are vegan (the company is endorsed by PETA as cruelty-free & the non-vegan ingredients include honey, silk and beeswax.) She will even rinse your head with apple cider vinegar which feels invigorating! She only accepts new clients on a referral basis so mention that you learned of her salon through my blog. Tina can be reached at (707) 225-1754 by text.
My stylist Ann Hopp with La Rouge Studio retired in December 2017 and has passed on her client list to salon owner & stylist Ashley Duncan. She also shared her knowledge of the vegan-friendly, ammonia & paraben-free Organic Color System hair coloring products with Ashley. The salon is not 100% vegan; they do use Redken products which are NOT cruelty-free or vegan. However, they offer the vegan, cruelty-free, paraben & sulfate-free Unite Professional Salon System. Ashley can be reached at 707.253.1051 to schedule your appointment. Be sure to mention that you are interested in a vegan experience & you heard about her on my blog!
I was so excited to learn recently of P&A Vegan Catering. Paula has been a vegan animal rights activist for over 20 years. She and her husband Alex make everything from scratch and though she specializes in vegan Italian & Mexican food and Seitan stuffed roasts, she is excited to tackle any request! Based out of Fairfield, she does large events of up to 300, small parties at your home and also provides food for organizations like Direct Action Everywhere and Vegans of the Bay. Her entire family is involved in vegan cooking and animal rights! What an amazing business to support! She can be reached at 707.386.6448 or through her Facebook page.
My husband Steve is a big fan of the local catering company La Saison. Natalie Niksa, owner and Chef of La Saison, catered a recent event for Mercedes-Benz of Fairfield that included vegan Hors D’ Oeuvres of olive oil roasted almonds; carrot tartare; savory granola bars made with lentils & wild rice; golden beets; persimmon tartlets and passion fruit pate! Wow, right?! I will be attending a wine education class in January 2018 at the Napa Valley Wine Academy that includes lunch that will be catered by La Saison. The vegan menu includes baby shiitakes, caramelized delicata squash, roasted root veggies with savory granola and fruit de pate! Natalie also has a small shop – Nappalachia – that offers some vegan treats and SunPotion transformational foods. My goal is to always provide complete transparency to my readers so I want to mention that I noticed recently that a product made of ants is sold at the shop.

The Napa Farmers Market is hosted every Tuesday & Saturday beginning on April 15th through November 21st at 195 Gasser Drive in Napa. It is now California Certified and committed to supporting local farmers & vendors. They offer many conventional fruits and vegetables and also some organic. I have happily seen so many new vegan options added over the 6 years I’ve lived here. The market is incredibly overpriced so I wouldn’t suggest doing all of my shopping there but it is fun to wander around and indulge occasionally.
Mayacamas Chocolate – Elena & Linda’s handcrafted vegan chocolates include their new lait-non-lait “milk” chocolate, the traditional dark chocolate made with 72% Organic Hispaniola Medium Roast, 72% Organic Sanchez Light Roast made with unfermented cacao, the Mole bar with golden raisins & pepitas, Strawberry Fields bar made with 60% dark chocolate & dried strawberries, Raisins In The Valley with 60% dark chocolate & Cabernet Grape Raisins and Sipping Chocolate made specifically to blend with non-dairy milk (Elena suggests using a coconut-almond blend!).
Monday Bakery’s owner & pastry chef Sally continues to add vegan options. The zucchini bread & raspberry brownie are both awesome!
Sweet Linda Lou’s – Linda specializes in vegan mini pies that are bite-sized and yummy!
FlourChylde Bakery – specialized in gluten-free products. I’ve been asking for years for sweet treats but they still currently only offer one vegan bread.
Sweet Peabody’s Homemade Sorbet – his handmade artisan sorbets are made in small batches in Napa using organic ingredients when possible. They are all dairy-free & gluten-free, do not contain corn syrup or artificial sweeteners, no colorants or synthetic stabilizers. He even purchases the fruit fresh from the farmers market. Delish!
Sweetie Pies – offer a vegan berry muffin, shortbread cookie & cupcake. My husband loves muffins & this is one of his favorites. I on the other hand love frosting and this cupcake is one of my favorites!
Way To Life Foods offers some of the best granola out there – they offer so many flavors that I can’t pin down my favorite. The cinnamon rolls are right up there with as good as Cinnaholic and the chocolate chip cookies are hands down the BEST chocolate chip cookie I’ve ever eaten! I haven’t tried the vegan burgers yet but I have to assume they will be as amazing as everything else is!
